True country music recording legend George Jones finally takes his place in the AVID country hall of fame. Long overdue of course, but if you take a look below at the other country legends in our catalogue, perhaps we may be forgiven for taking so long. We wanted to get the selection right and we think we did by featuring five of the great man’s classic early recordings. As you will see from the writing credits George Jones was one of the earliest singer songwriters from the very beginning of his long career. In this he followed one of his great hero’s Hank Williams. Ironically one of George’s greatest hits and his first Billboard number one was 1959s “White Lightning” which was written by J.P. Richardson otherwise known as The Big Bopper. Jones hated it and did not want to be associated with rock n roll or rockabilly even though the track was a tour de force as you will hear on the album “Sings White Lightning”. Other songs written by George Jones and featured on our five selections include Seasons Of My Heart, a hit for Johnny Cash, Just One More Time, also a hit for Cash, Life To Go, a hit for Stonewall Jackson, You Gotta Be My Baby, Don’t Stop The Music, Colour Of The Blues, a hit for Loretta Lynn, and his first hit from 1955 Why Baby Why. We hope you will enjoy the sound of a man who many during his lifetime referred to as “the greatest living country singer” the incomparable George Jones. As with all AVID releases, we hope you enjoy them and check out our extensive catalogue for more great music across jazz and many other musical genres.
